It’s great to see talented local sportspeople recognised at the national level. A recent example is Year 13 Roxburgh Area School pupil Jonty McKinnel who has been named captain of the New Zealand Barbarians Area Schools team.
The squad for 2016 was recently named following the National Area Schools tournament, held in Dunedin, earlier this month. Jonty plays Openside Flanker or Number 8 for Dunstan High School in the Otago premier schools competition. He made the New Zealand Barbarians Area Schools team last year but this will be his first experience as captain.
The team will play its annual fixture against Waikato’s Harlequins Under 18s on September 3 at Hamilton’s St Paul’s Collegiate.
In an article in the NZ Herald Barbarians team manager and former Thames Valley and Northland prop Mike Smith said
“Jonty … stood out (against the Harlequins last year) and he’s a natural leader”
Congratulations Jonty and all the best for the game in September!
