The SBS Bank Tour of Southland kicked off this afternoon with a prologue lap around Queen’s Park, marking 60 years of the event.
This year the event includes 20 teams, up from the 14 teams last year. There are five road cyclists from Central Otago amongst the 120 riders aiming for the yellow jersey in the punishing seven-day race.
The Central Otago based contingent includes:
• James Williamson from Alexandra representing the CREATION SIGNS – L&M GROUP RICOH (CLM) team.
• Liam Aitcheson from Alexandra (U23), Jordan Gilmore from Cromwell and Hamish Mchugh-Smith (U23) from Earnscleugh representing the CENTRAL BENCHMAKERS –WILLBIKE (CBW) team.
• Gavin Mason from Wanaka representing TALBOT FOREST CHEESE – ULTIMO (TFC).
Stage one of the tour commences tomorrow (Monday 31st October) with a 170km leg starting at the Invercargill Velodrome and finishing in Lumsden. The tour includes a further 6 stages around Southland before finishing with a 77km ride from Winton to Invercargill on Saturday.
